Williams Settlement Act Information
In May of 2000, a class action lawsuit was filed which included all
K-12 students in California's most deficient schools. During the
summer of 2004, the participants settled the Williams v. State of
California lawsuit by agreeing to a legislative package that addressed
the plaintiff's concerns. The legislative package was adopted as
Education Code 35186.
The settlement included the requirement that all school districts in
California adopt a resolution articulating the changes to their Uniform
Complaint Procedures. The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District Board of
Education adopted the required resolution at a Board meeting on
Tuesday, January 4, 2005.
Each school district is also required to post the Williams settlement
summary in each classroom. Please note that this web site includes

Williams Settlement Summary
Attention Parents & Guardians
State law requires the following:
1. There should be sufficient textbooks and instructional
materials. Each student, including English learners, must
have a textbook or instructional materials, or both, to use
in class and to take home to complete required
homework assignments.
2. School facilities must be clean, safe, and maintained in
good repair. If you do not think these requirements are being met, you can obtain
a Uniform Complaint Form at the school office or the District
Superintendent's office.
