Cross Country » Overview


Coach James Maynard has been coaching for 29 years. He has experience in a large range of events over many years. Most recently the head cross country and track & field coach for Norwalk High School. Prior to that he served as head cross country and assistant coach for track and field at Marina High School in Huntington Beach. At Norwalk his in league coaching record is 318-53 for boys including Suburban League Champions 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 for boys and 2015, 2016, and 2017 for girls in the past 9 years. He is currently Head Cross Country Coach and Assistant Track & Field at East Los Angeles College, too. Besides coaching high school and college Coach Maynard has worked with beginning marathoners, elite distance runners, and served as a personal trainer and private coach for a variety of sports. Maynard studied the Sociology of Sport, Sport Psychology, Exercise Physiology, Biology, and Anatomy and Physiology for more than twenty years.

Coach Maynard ran cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field for California State University at Los Angeles. He was on the All-Regional Team for cross country in 1998 and 1999 as well as All-Conference at 10,000 meters in track in 1999 and 2000. Prior to CSULA, Maynard ran at Golden West College where is the current 10,000 meter school record holder since 1994. On the roads he was the six-time winner Palos Verdes Marathon.  Winner of the Western Hemisphere Marathon 2001,  second place at Long Beach Marathon 2004 and 4th place 2005,  fifth place OC Marathon 2004,  sixth place at Tucson Marathon 2003,  seventh place Carlsbad Marathon 2005 and seventh place at San Francisco Chronicle Marathon 2000,  second place Master’s Division and 1st U.S. Master’s at The City of Los Angeles Marathon 2010, and competed for Team USA at the World Master’s Athletics competition in 2011. All accomplished while being self coached.
